About Yoga  (Read my story to learn about YORK Yoga!)

The word "YOGA" means "to join" or "to yoke"; the union of the individual self with the universal self. This union is the union of the body with the mind, and the mind with the self.

Warrior II Pose - This is a powerful pose to develop strength in the legs, open the hips and pelvis, and cultivate the quality of a warrior. It is important to keep bent knee over ankle & big toe; bringing the thigh into position like a table, arms extended level with shoulders, energy coming out of your fingers.

Triangle Pose - This is one of the most challenging poses to do correctly.  It is important to be pushing down into all four corners of your feet, lifting knee caps, keeping body in line with legs, pelvis in neutral, ribs extending evenly on both sides... a lot of details, more than I can cover on a website!  It is important to do this one carefully so you don't damage your knees.

BENEFITS: Yoga asanas help insure an even distribution of bio-energy, or life force, which brings the mind to a state of calm. A practitioner of yoga faces life not as a victim, but as a master, in control of his or her life situations, circumstances, and environment.

YOGA & HEALTH
Asanas balance the respiratory, circulatory, excretory, and reproductive systems perfectly. The equilibrium in the body then brings mental peace and enhances intellectual clarity. The practice of asanas has a beneficial impact on the whole body, toning the muscles, tissues, ligaments, joints, and nerves, they relax the body and mind. Asanas also boost metabolism, lymphatic circulation, and hormonal secretions, and bring about chemical balance in the body. Good health results from perfect communication between each part of the body and mind, and when each cell communes with every other, this leads to a sense of physical and emotional well-being.

YOGA & FITNESS
Most types of exercise are competitive. Yoga, although noncompetitive, is nevertheless challenging. The challenge is to one's own will power. It is a competition between one's self and one's body. No other form of exercise so completely involves the mind and self with the body, and results in all-around development and harmony. Yoga involves the equal exertion of all parts of the body and does not overstrain any one part.

YOGA & STRESS
Yoga minimizes the impact of stress on the individual. Regular practice of asanas and breathing exercises strengthens the nervous system and helps people face stressful situations positively. Yoga can help you face the turmoil of life with steadiness and stability.
Asanas improve blood flow to all the cells of the body, and revitalize the nerves cells. This flow strengthens the nervous system and its capacity for enduring stress.
